Mobile data collection solution

Mobile computing:

We have over 20 years of experience with mobile data collection, working with the first “lap top” computers to the early prototypes of pen tablets.  We have learned a lot from all of the this experience and paid a high price to learn these lessons. Today the Pocket PC is a very powerful platform for use in the field for data collection and reconciliation.

Pocket PC Example:

Below is an example of a Pocket PC running Thermal Trend – Lean, tab views of the screen and how the data flows.

Pocket PC's have may advantages over Note Book computers or pen tablets, as well as the fact that Windows Mobile 6 Operating System (OS) is he predominate foundation for all data collection devices.  Microsoft has stated that it will continue to support Windows Mobile 6 for over the next 10 years.  Allowing manufacturers like Motorola, Intermec, Symbol and others of specialized / ruggedized Pocket PC's to continue to build on that platform.

Pocket PC’s advantages:

  • Tremendous battery life in the field.  You can use a Pocket PC all day and not have to struggle with batteries.
  • Fast charging as compared to Notebooks or Tablets.
  • Much better visibility and readability of the computer screen in bright sun light (they have higher quality Transflective screens).
  • Data input by using the built-in Microsoft handwriting recognition and self learning and suggestion of words and sentences is literally unbelievable.  (Not matched on any notebook or tablet).
  • Ability to be custom built with integrated barcode scanners, cameras, GPS, etc.

The development of our latest version of Thermal Trend - Lean

Data flow on the Pocket PC

Another key consideration is optimization of the user interface based on the smaller screen size. By analyzing the way that an end user interacts with the “flow” of data on the smaller screen, it allows us to develop a system based on delivering just the right information at just the right time in the work flow model.  It is very important not to overwhelm the thermographer with information, or information that they don’t need at that moment that distracts them from being able to intuitively access the information that they need, when they need it.

By using the principles of LEAN Thinking developed by Toyota Motor Company, it has allowed us to work to continuously improve the end users experience when working with the Pocket PC's limited screen size.  As they say “doing more with less” as in how to get the most out of the limited screen size, has show us ways to improve the overall user interface to provide the right information when and where it is needed. This commitment to continuous improvements is why we call the latest version of Thermal Trend…”Lean”.

Taking the lessons that we have learned on the Pocket PC and using them on the desktop has allowed us to truly develop a database application that has a synergy, not only between the two platforms but also between the end user and the software.  The user interface is the same on both, so that the learning curve is intuitive and much shorter when learning how to interact with the database.
